The Royal variety is the native variety of the Sierra de Cazorla (Jaén), although the Picual variety has displaced it year after year, representing little more than 5% of the olive grove area of the DO, because its collection is more Difficult, and requires more labor, which makes the final product more expensive. The Royal variety is found almost exclusively in the municipalities of Cazorla, La Iruela and Quesada, all in the province of Jaén. Of red color, its main characteristic organoléptica is that the oil that offers is of fresh fruity and sweet aroma. Its taste is soft and not aggressive to the palate. In the nose it presents an intense mature fruity with hues of ripe fig. The Royal variety is a variety of high and constant production, although the olives provide low content in oil, in contrast it is a oil of high quality. This variety is the only 'Royal' in the world with Denomination of Origin, "Extra virgin olive oil DOP Sierra de Cazorla".
